Signal crossing solutions in von Neumann self-replicating cellular automata

چکیده
Signal crossing is a significant problem within von Neumann cellular automata (29-states); only three solutions are known. This paper gives a thorough examination of these three solutions, including discussion of performance and the effective means of construction, including the mechanism of autoinitialisation. Application of these solutions within self-replicators is then examined for Nobili and von Neumann architectures. Two self-replicators for Nobili cellular automata are presented. We demonstrate the transformation of cellular automata between these architectures; both configurations are transformed into von Neumann equivalents. We derive the signal crossing configuration having minimal footprint. We also present conjectures regarding signal crossing organs, suggest the nature of tapeless von Neumann self-replicators, discuss the distribution of complexity in self-replicators, and distinguish holistic selfreplication from self-replication by means of partial construction, a novel mechanism.

Constructibility of Signal-Crossing Solutions in von Neumann 29-State Cellular Automata
In von Neumann 29-state cellular automata, the crossing of signals is an important problem, with three solutions reported in the literature. These solutions greatly impact automaton design, especially self-replicators. This paper examines these solutions, with emphasis upon their constructibility. We show that two of these solutions are difficult to construct, and offer an improved design techn...

This thesis demonstrates for the rst time that it is possible to automatically discover self-replicating structures in cellular space automata models rather than, as has been done in the past, to design them manually. Self-replication is deened as the process an entity undergoes in constructing a copy of itself. Von Neumann was the rst to investigate artiicial self-replicating structures and di...

Replicating loops represent a class of benchmarks, which is commonly studied in relation with cellular automata. Most of the known loops, for which replication rules exist in two-dimensional cellular space, create the copies of themselves using a certain construction algorithm that is common for all the emerging replicas. In such cases, the replication starts from a single instance of the loop ...

In the 1940s Stanislaw Ulam and John Von Neumann came up with the idea of cellular Automata (CAs), which Von Neumann later used to develop a universal constructor (Neumann, 1966). The universal constructor is a pattern implemented in a CA that consists of a two parts: The universal constructor and a tape. The universal constructor reads from the tape and produces what is encoded. A universal co...

Cellular automata (CA for short) proposed by J. von Neumann and S. Ulam in the middle of 1960's are dynamical systems where time, space and states of sites are all discrete. They consist of a d-dimensional array of identical automata (cells), each of which has one of the nite states and changes its state according to the state-transition rule sets mapping from states of its neighbor cells (usua...
